Dear Colleagues,
The ACMHN is holding its 3rd Annual Primary Mental Health Care Conference titled "Knowledge, Strategy, Vision: Nurses Leading Primary Mental Health Care" on 19, 20 March 2010 in Canberra. The Conference website is: http://www.astmanagement.com.au/acmhn10/
The conference will explore the current and future roles of mental health nurses in primary mental health care in Australia. The delivery of health care in the primary care setting continues to be a government priority and it is important that we as nurses inform this debate.
The diversity of nursing practice in primary mental health care will be examined with presentations on clinical issues, business aspects and policy trends. Inspirational keynote speakers will explore the challenges that they have faced and overcome to provide nurse led services.
Dr Jill Clendon RN, PhD, MCNA (NZ) from New Zealand will be joining us to discuss the growing impact nurse are having in primary health care in a variety of areas in including mental health. Jill will be presenting an overview of the New Zealand primary health care sector since introduction of the Primary Health Care Strategy in 2001, and discussing the development of primary health care nursing and the approach New Zealand have taken, with a focus on the development of some of the primary mental health care nursing initiatives. The most common initiatives were the appointment of primary mental health co-ordinators (mostly nurses) and primary mental health nurses to undertake brief assessment and intervention directly with clients and/or co-ordinate the care given by GPs and practice nurses.
Other inspiring speakers include:
- Louise Stewart, Managing Director Revive Clinics who will provide some insight into how she has developed nurse practitioner led clinics in Australia.
- Stephen Caroll, a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse, psychotherapist and sex therapist in private practice in Orange NSW will deliver a keynote address on the the unique role of Mental Health Nurses as leaders in mental health primary care.
- Ian Sinnett, founder of the Plymouth Independent Community Psychiatric Nursing Service in the UK will offer insights as to how we can further develop models of primary mental health care delivery and advance the role of nurses in primary health care delivery in Australia.
We hope you can joins us
